Do you own a business? Are you part of a club? Do you have a special event coming up? There are many reasons that you may want to create your own custom patches, but if you don’t have a piece artwork that you want to recreate for the design, you may not know where to start. Here are some helpful tips:
Start with a reason.
First, figure out what you want to convey with your custom patches. Are you celebrating a birthday? Did your daughter just complete a Girl Service Troop project? Do you want to include a business logo? Are you marketing an organization?
Decide on elements.
Once you’ve figured out what you want your custom patches to project, decide what visual elements you want to include. If you’re creating a business logo, decide how large you want the logo to be. If you’re celebrating an anniversary, maybe you’d like to include the number of years you’re celebrating. If it’s a patch for camping, you may want to have a tent or trees on it. Write down or sketch out as many ideas as you can, then narrow it down to the one you like most.
Consider the shape and size.
At American Patch, we can create custom patches of nearly any shape and size. Think about where this patch is going to be. If it’s on a jacket, you may want to opt for a larger size. If it’s going to be framed, maybe a medium size. If you’re sewing it onto a Girl Service Troop or Boy Scout vest, you may want to make it small. Then, consider the shape. Whether it’s squared, circular, or a “fancy cut” patch with unique lines, we can help you create it.
Embroidered, woven, or dyed?
The most traditional type of patch that we can create is an embroidered patch, where we embroider thread onto a backing and create a raised design. Woven patches are similar to embroidered patches, but use thinner thread to achieve more detail and aren’t as raised. Dye sublimation is the most modern way to create custom patches. Instead of thread, we dye the patch material to achieve the most detail. Take the amount of detail in your design into consideration before you choose.
