Creating a custom patch is a wonderful way to promote your business, celebrate a special occasion, or use it to identify a group or cause. American Patch offers clients a way to create custom patches for any occasion. Once you have designed your patch, the next step will be how to choose the correct border for custom embroidered patches.
Patch Borders Come in Two Options
The finishing touch of your patch will be the border. There are three types of borders that you can use for your patches. The one you select will be based on preference as well as your patch shape and design.
• Merrowed Border
A merrowed border is commonly known as the overlock stitch border. It is a type of border where the thread is used to “wrap around” the edges and give the patch a distinguished look. It is the most common type of border used on patches.
These borders are common when you have a basic shape and design on your patch. Most people will select a standard color for the border to offset the shape and design. Using this type of border is also very cost effective for the customer.
• Laser Cut Border
Laser-cut borders are perfect for patches with certain shapes. The laser cutting or satin stitching on these borders will protect the patch and enhance the unique shape or design without overwhelming the appearance.
Laser-cut borders are very thin and will blend into any material you choose for your custom patches. If you are using a unique shape, you will love how this border creates clean lines that surround your patch.
• Stitched Border
The stitched edge is distinct from a binding stitch like a merrow in that it can be customized to any size required by the customer, as opposed to the merrowed edge, which is typically standardized at 1/8″ thickness and applied post-production using a different machine. Stitched edges are ideal for embroidered patches that have been cut into specific shapes.
